Halloween parade!

We had a Halloween Parade in the neighborhood Saturday morning, and Alyssa took part, dressed in her pumpkin costume. There were a lot of kids in the parade, and Alyssa had a wonderful time! Later that night, the neighborhood was full of trick-or-treaters, including Alyssa and her friend Ella.

On Sunday, Alyssa went for a ride in her new trike, a birthday gift from Omi and Opi.

Cute videos, almost one year old

Alyssa turns one year old this week! Her language skills have really taken off. She's always surprising us with new words, she knows so many commands, she tries hard to imitate what she hears, and she sometimes speaks in long, babbling sentences. Here are a couple of videos showcasing her speaking and listening skills!

Mama or Dada: "Alyssa, can you sing a song?"
Alyssa (in high pitched voice): "La la la!"

Alyssa can point to about 15 body parts (on herself or someone else), and can identify at least 5 articles of clothing. And she can thump her chest like a gorilla (a "lala"), do silly arms like a monkey. And look what just came back after a two-month hiatus: her silly face!

This is Alyssa "going boom on the bed", a a trick she devised on her own months ago:

End of Summer 2009

It's hard to believe how quickly the summer has passed by! Great health news: Alyssa's hips are doing very well, and this past week, her eating has really picked up. She weighed in the 15-pound range for about 3 or 4 months, but at this rate, she'll be in the 16-pound range for 3 to 4 weeks! Only 2 months to go before she's one year old.

Miriam was a big help to all of us over the summer, and she taught Alyssa how to do things like "bouncy, bouncy." She got Alyssa this nice Pooh bear as a going away present. We wish Miriam lots of good wishes as she heads back to college!

Alyssa has also been picking up a lot of language. She will, on command, do "boom" on the bed (fall backwards from sitting), indicate where the fan is (even in a room that doesn't have a fan), repeat "ub, ub, ub" when it's time to get picked up, tell us that a dog says "mmm mmm mmm" and a puppy says "ub ub ub," correctly pick out the red and yellow building blocks, and even do her best to repeat words like "yellow" and "gorilla" (they sound pretty good, actually). She can point to one's nose, ears, and mouth, and her own ear.

She has become quite a fast crawler, and pulls herself up to standing whenever she can. She can give things to people ("Give the red Lego to mama"), and she loves her books. And she's gotten very good at kissing!

Alyssa really gets into her food. (The first picture is really cute when enlarged, just click on it):

We took Alyssa to the Stone Zoo this week. She loved the bird show, where big raptors flew directly overhead. This is where she finally learned how to clap!

We also took Alyssa into Boston, just for a change of scenery. We saw street performers at Quincy Market, ate dinner at the pier, and went on a carousel set up on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Finally, we just had a visit from Omi and Opi today. They visited Alyssa at the park to watch her swing (and, starting today, slide while mostly sitting), then came back home and gave her a gift of a nice peek-a-boo book.

Alyssa making her silly face

Alyssa is 9 to 9.5 months old in these pictures.

Ask Alyssa to make a silly face, and she is happy to deliver! She learned how to do this by looking at one of the pictures in her Baby Einstein book; in the picture, Vincent Van Goat is sticking his tongue out. Alyssa seems to hear the words "silly face" regardless of the context, so if you say, "Good silly face!" you'll get another silly face.

She learned to crawl a couple of weeks ago, and now she's quite fast. She just started pulling herself up to stand.

Alyssa's diet consists of avocado, Dinty Moore beef stew (pureed, with added carrots and potatoes), chicken stew (made by Daa Daa), soy yogurt, Cheerios, bites of watermelon (we call it "red melon" because she knows what water is), blueberries and grapes (both chopped), bites of bagel, and decreasing amounts of formula. We put as much formula powder and canola oil as we can into the food to make up for her lack of formula.

We had visits recently from Omi and Opi and Grandma!

Starting to stand and talk!

Alyssa is 8 to 8.5 months old in these pictures.

Look who can stand! (Provided there's something to lean on)

She's getting quite a little vocabulary, too. She knows the answer to "What does a cow say?" (Answer: "Mmmmmmmm!") as well as "What does a dog say?" (Answer: "daaaaag!", her word for dog). She was quite pleased with pointing out dogs in the park the other day: "dag! daaag! daaaaag!"

Her other words include "egg" (for an egg-shaped rattle that she enjoys), "doll" (which sounds distinct but similar to "dag" and "da da"), "ball", and "hi". And, of course, "mama" and "dada", which she has said for a while now. She also clearly understands "water" and "bird". I'm sure I heard her say "good girl" when she did something she thought was praiseworthy, and I heard a very clear "outside" one morning when we were opening the window blinds.

She also repeats short musical phrases. like "ah ah ah" spoken in different pitches.

Now, if she'd only eat more than 10 ounces of formula in a day...

Alyssa plays the piano

Alyssa just had her hip surgery, and is in great spirits. She has even learned to wave recently, a skill that came in handy last night when she waved back to all of the nurses who were swooning over her.

We just took this video minutes ago. Alyssa loves playing the keyboard with Daddy. Mommy is behind the camera.

3.5 months old

We don't think she recognizes herself in the mirror yet, but that doesn't stop Daddy from wanting to do experiments to prove it... like those ones where they put dots on a dolphin or chimp to see if they try to wipe it off when looking in the mirror.

Alyssa had her first baby sitter when Dave and Tami went to Dave's company's holiday party (always in January) in the North End. Aunt Judy was more than happy to spend some time with Alyssa!

Alyssa gets ready to brave the outdoors.

We sang to her: "You're so cute / In your purple suit!"

She's been interested in holding her own bottle lately. It usually doesn't last very long, but long enough for Daddy to finish brushing his teeth before taking Alyssa to day care.

Alyssa has two sleeping poses. The first is when she's falling asleep - she sucks her right thumb, and strokes her head with her left hand. This is her second sleeping pose, when she's in a deeper sleep.

Cute kid!

Heather and Bill visited to meet Alyssa!

There's a smile!

Alyssa has been doing a lot of talking lately. Her new favorite thing is to blow raspberries, which she's doing in this picture.

She has some stylin' Valentines Day pants!

8 - 11 weeks

We finally managed to capture at least the beginning of one of those hard-to-photograph smiles:

Here's Alyssa with Dr. Bear, who obtained a PhD in bearology:

Enjoying a Mother Goose story!

Alyssa sits on Daddy's lap...

...and is just incredibly cute! You need to click on the image to fully appreciate the little dribble coming from her mouth :)

Alyssa was very excited about the keyboard, and even pressed some keys on her own. This is not a staged photo - she really did press the keys!

Just taken yesterday. Compare to the first picture in this post to see how she's grown in 3 weeks!

Finally, a little video of Alyssa making sounds. At 40 seconds, Mommy asks, "Can you say 'boo'?", and Alyssa responds.
